Vehicle Description
Check out this absolutely stunning Porsche 911 Turbo Look Targa. Between 1980 and 1985 Porsche didn't import 930 Turbos to the US because of the strict emission control laws. With is wide "hips" and aggressive styling, buyers still clamored for the look of the 930 Turbo. Enter the M491 option code that could be ordered through the Sonderwunsch program starting with the 1984 model year. The M491 Targa is a variant of the 911 Carrera 3.2 produced between 1984 and 1989, officially known as the "Turbo-Look".
Key Characteristics
Body: It features the widebody styling of the contemporary 911 Turbo (930), including flared front and rear fenders. At some point during its history, a prior owner removed the rear whale tale. We decided not to add it back during the refurbishment as the wide hipped Targa looks great without the tail. It should be noted that an interested buyer can choose to have Sonderwerks add an OEM whale tail back to the car if you'd prefer the original look.
Performance Components: Beyond aesthetics, the M491 package included the Turbo's superior braking system (four vented/perforated discs), stiffer suspension, and wider Fuchs alloy wheels. Engine: It retains the naturally aspirated 3.2-liter flat-six engine from the standard Carrera, rather than the Turbo’s forced-induction engine.
Body Style: As a "Targa," it features the classic removable roof panel and fixed roll bar, providing an open-air experience with more structural rigidity than a full cabriolet.
The M491 Targa is one of the rarest iterations of the 3.2 Carrera. While over 3,500 "Turbo-Look" units were produced across all body styles, Targa production was exceptionally low. For 1985, this was one of only 65 wide body Targas produced by Porsche making it highly collectable.
When the car was first received, a Porsche Production Specification was order with the hope of returning the car to its "as delivered" spec. Manufactured in December of 1984 the option list included central locking, power sport seats in Champagne and Black piping, painted wheel centers in white gold, cruise control and of course the previously mentioned M491 Turbo Look option. This gorgeous example has recently received a full Sonderwerks glass out respray in its original Guards Red. The paint is stunning with no defects. The undercarriage of the car received a full steam cleaning to return it to its showroom appearance. The 16x7 and 16x9 Fuchs where sent out for a complete refurbishment, bringing them back to their original white gold appearance, setting this car apart and looking amazing.
The interior was also completely recovered with the sport seats and rear seats wrapped in new champagne leather with black piping. The Targa top was also completely rebuilt and recovered by our master upholstery team. The dash was recovered in beautiful black leather and a new "visually appropriate" Continental/VDO radio replaced the typical hideous 90's radio replacement.
With just over 100K miles, this M491 has been reviewed mechanically with a full engine compression and leakdown performed, showing a strong and healthy motor with no more than 4% leakdown on any cylinder. The motor, transmission, suspension and electrical components have all been tested, with any required repairs performed. This one is ready for the road. Over $40,000 has been spent to return this M491 to a very high standard.
